Production on the Next CD

Don has begun working and writing for his next project. As you can see from his "Discography" the choices are many. He has been collaborating with Derek West, the drummer from our old band "Gunshy"  They have begun laying down rhythm tracks to a few songs.  Don's most recent songs are "Any Better" ; "I Wonder" and "When Jennifer Smiles."

A Star for the Night

"A Star for the Night" has had several events including DJ for the Day, Greg Scott II, Leeann Rimes plus a local fashion show.  One event receiving much media attention was  the bull riding championship rodeo. One of the "Star for the Night" participants, Levi Johnson was surprised when he received the championship belt buckle from the rodeo champion.  If you know of a child that would benefit from an event in their honor, please contact Dejra at                   (530) 895-1215

 Feedback

Don responds to recent e-mails:

No, Kanned Lamb is not playing live anywhere.

Joanne, Tom and I used to play the clubs around the bay area with a lot of different musicians but I gave it up about five years ago with no regrets. I wanted to focus on recording my music and I found out I couldn’t do both.

Why am I recording my music?

I’ve always wanted to make a living at writing music…any kind of music, whether it be hit songs, movies, jingles whatever…I gave up dreams of being a rock star years ago along with a full head of hair. My intent is to write for other artists and Kanned Lamb is the vehicle that’s going to take me there. Now there’s a lot of artists out there that write their own material these days, but just as many that don’t. That’s where I come in. I have some kick ass stuff that Cher would sound great singing. Give me Will Smith for "Only in America." The love theme from the "Titanic" sold a bazillion copies but hey, I have love themes too…just get me Celine Dion to record them. I just finished a really good ballad that I would kill to have Garth Brooks or Vince Gill sing. I’ve also written a "Pepsi" jingle that’s impossible to get out of your head once you’ve heard it. It’s just a competitive business to break into.

Why am I marketing my music in this way?

It’s the easiest and cheapest way to get the music out there and at the same time try to recoup some of the costs. A & R Reps don’t care about the quality of a recording but do care whether or not the song has the potential to be a top 10 hit. Hey, the CD was entirely recorded in my family room for as cheaply as possible. After all, we have a mortgage and we both work full time at other jobs. As much as I would like to be solely supported by Slap Happy Productions, I’m grounded enough to know it ain’t gonna happen right now. But that isn’t to say that someday I would like to hear some of my material recorded in a multi-million dollar recording studio with a top-notch producer. It could happen.

Will I forget everybody when I get there?

No.

How do I find people to perform my material?

First, I try to do as much as I can myself. Not because I’m a perfectionist or because I’m a total glory hog, but simply because it’s easier. When I say I’m going to do something…it gets done. I can rely on myself, but I’ve found in the past that I can’t rely on other people. Now, God gave me a bit of musical talent but he didn’t give me the voice to go along with it, so I have always needed vocalists. I married one! Joanne has had to learn every one of my songs so she can either sing it herself or teach it to someone else. I don’t have the ability to write a piece of music that can be interpreted on paper. I can only try to convey what I hear in my head. Joanne’s gotten really good at it considering the times she probably wanted to slap me. I just give her the melody and lyrics and God love her…she sings it! But I’m always open to other vocalists. The variety makes it all more interesting.

How come my musical styles are so different?

The more I can crossover the better. If I break into the pop scene…great. Adult contemporary, rock and roll…it doesn’t matter. I’m trying to show I can write it all. Time Capsule is a good representation of my versatility as a writer.

Is Time Capsule the only material you have recorded?

No. I have more recordings with other musicians and vocalists from past bands and other stuff I have recorded myself. Everything on the discography page has been recorded in one form or another.

Do you like getting e-mail?

 Yes…keep 'em coming…
